Thesis
Marqeta is modern card-issuing infrastructure — the API layer fintechs, banks, and brands use to spin up and run card programs with real-time authorization and controls. It is a picks-and-shovels bet on embedded finance: as more companies put payment cards inside their products, Marqeta processes the volume underneath without owning the customer relationship.
The model's strength — powering high-growth programs — is also its weakness. Revenue is concentrated in a few large customers (Block's Cash App most of all), the renewed Block contract reset economics, and GAAP profitability is still a work in progress. Diversifying the customer base and proving durable, profitable growth are what the thesis turns on.
Catalysts
