Thesis

Post-SanDisk spin, Western Digital is a pure-play HDD business in a two-vendor market with Seagate. The investment case is the same nearline capacity tailwind: AI workloads generate prodigious training data and inference artifacts that live on disk. Western Digital is following Seagate into HAMR but trails on time-to-volume.

The cleaner capital structure post-spin and any catch-up on HAMR are the swing factors.

Catalysts

  • Nearline HDD pricing in a disciplined duopoly
  • HAMR qualification and ramp at major cloud customers
  • Hyperscaler capex skew toward capacity storage
  • Margin recovery as post-spin cost base settles
