Thesis
Redwood Materials, founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, is building a domestic closed-loop battery-materials supply chain — recycling end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap into cathode and anode materials, reducing reliance on Chinese refining. A second-life energy-storage business reuses recovered packs for data-center and grid power.
The investment case is onshoring the battery-materials loop, underwritten by IRA content rules and allied-supply mandates. As a private name it has no market cap here; coverage conviction reflects scale and ambition against heavy execution risk. Risks: enormous capex, battery-metal price volatility, EV-demand sensitivity, and competition from incumbent refiners and other recyclers.
Catalysts
- Cathode / anode material production ramp
- Automaker supply agreements
- Redwood Energy storage deployments for data centers
- Project financing and IRA-credit qualification
