Thesis
IREN (formerly Iris Energy) is a publicly listed bitcoin miner that has executed a credible pivot into AI / HPC data-center colocation, leveraging its existing footprint of renewable-energy-anchored sites in British Columbia and Texas. The company has signed AI cloud and reference-architecture deals (including with NVIDIA partners) and is building liquid-cooled GPU clusters as the second leg of the business.
The investment case is leverage to data-center power capacity at sites the company already controls — a scarce resource as hyperscaler GPU deployment outpaces grid interconnection in many regions. Bitcoin mining remains a cash-flow generator and a hedge, but the strategic value compresses to the AI / HPC pivot. Risks: HPC execution against entrenched colocation incumbents, BTC price cycle exposure, and capex intensity through the cluster ramp.
Catalysts
- AI / HPC colocation contract wins and capacity utilization
- GPU cluster deployment cadence
- Site-level power capacity expansion and grid interconnection progress
- Bitcoin mining margin contribution as hash price cycles
