Thesis
AES is a global power company pivoting toward renewables and storage, and it has become a notable signer of large data-center power-purchase agreements that contract new clean capacity directly to hyperscalers. A contracted renewables backlog and utility rate base support a visible growth path, and the data-center demand gives that pipeline a premium customer.
This is the higher-risk way to play data-center power. The model is capital intensive and carries meaningful leverage, so it is sensitive to interest rates, financing conditions, and execution on the build-out. Delivering the backlog on time and on budget — while managing the balance sheet — is the whole thesis.
Catalysts
- New data-center PPA signings and backlog growth
- Renewables and storage project completions
- Asset recycling and balance-sheet deleveraging
- Rate / financing environment for capital-heavy build
